The Council for Foreign and Community Relations recently discussed matters pertaining to the security of the region.

CARICOM Ministers of Foreign Affairs recently attended a two-day meeting in Saint Lucia.

The meeting provided a forum for ministers to discuss regional and international issues plaguing the community, and to seek possible remedies.

Minister for External Affairs, International Trade and Civil Aviation, and Chair of the meeting, the Hon. Alva Baptiste, said the security of the region is high on COFCOR’s agenda.

“Our objective is to give careful and sensible treatment to the issues, and to come to some practical conclusions on matters pertaining to transnational threats to the security of our region," he said. "We are all well aware of the challenges that we face in this regard and I do hope that we will be able to come to conclusions that advance our thinking and planning on this very serious subject.”

This year’s meeting was held under the theme “Current and Emerging Transnational Security Threats: The Foreign Policy Dimension of Security.”

CARICOM Secretary-General, His Excellency, Ambassador Irwin La Rocque said the Caribbean Community will be engaging in several multilateral engagements in 2015.

“These include, the Third International Conference for Financing for Development in July, the UN Summit on the post-2015 development agenda in September, and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC) in December. All of these processes will have a significant policy and agenda shaping impact on the nature of international development priorities and relations,” he said.

The 18th COFCOR meeting precedes the regular meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of CARICOM, scheduled for July 2015.

The meeting was held on May 21 - 22.
